The attention of the Federal University Otuoke has been drawn to a publication in the Sahara Reporters of 18 December, 2018, which attributed the downgrading of some academic staff of our University to a phantom loggerhead between the Vice Chancellor and four of the affected staff.
According to the said report, “Sahara Reporters gathered that Eze, Nwadike, Shilgba and Nwabuzor had been at loggerheads with the Vice Chancellor, Accra Jaja, since he assumed office. The quartet were said to have received threat letters due to their stance against the VC’s style of running the institution.”
For the sake of clarity and the benefit of the general public and posterity, we want to state that the Vice Chancellor, Prof Seth Accra Jaja does not have any personal disagreement with any of the said persons at anytime.
The simple truth is that the Governing Council (not the Vice Chancellor) of Federal University Otuoke at its 10th meeting made key decisions involving staff appointments and discipline. These important decisions are clear pointer to the resolve of Council to sanitize the system in order to take the University to grater height. Consequently, the Governing Council of the Federal University Otuoke re-classified the academic appointments by downgrading 7 teaching staff appointments to lower ranks for lack of requisite scholarship.
Those affected are: (1) Dr. Steve Nwabuzor, who was downgraded from the rank of Professor to Lecturer 1 and further redeployed from Faculty of Engineering to the Faculty of Science. (2) Dr. Leonard K Shilgba, downgraded from the rank of Professor to Senior Lecturer. (3) Dr. Timothy Falade Obalade, downgraded from the rank of Associate Professor to Senior Lecturer. (4) Dr. Felina Nwadike, downgraded from Associate Professor to Senior Lecturer. (5) Dr. Sepribo Lawson-Jack, downgraded from the rank of Associate Professor to Lecturer 1. (6) Dr. Marcellina Offoha, downgraded from the rank of Associate Professor to Lecturer 1. (7) Dr. Evans Eze, downgraded from the rank of Associate Professor to Lecturer 2.
We invite Sahara Reporters and others who wish to write or speak on this subject to thoroughly investigate the issues involved rather than succumb to the emotional blackmail by those who want to shortchange the University.
Mr. Yousuo Donald Iruo
Registrar/Secretary of Governing Council
