The SUG financial autonomy has been a special case that has been lingering from government to government in our darling Federal University Otuoke, Bayelsa as the school management currently led by Prof. Seth A. Jaja has refused to grant this autonomy to the student union government despite making several promises.
There have been cries and concerns raised by various SUG governments and students alike in the need for the student union government to be financially autonomous but all pleas so far has not yeided any positive results.
One would begin to wonder why the school management, from the leadership of Prof. Mobolaji Aluko, who collected SUG dues even when there was no S.U Government yet in the school, to the present administration has refused to release the monies of the union to the governments but rather prefer one third of the total sum to every government to comes to power.
The school management has been releasing one-third of the SUG dues from every session to every new government on the assumption of office, the second one-third is given much later while the last trench is reserved for the next government.
Now the mystery in all this, a question no one has cared to ask is, how much is the total money and how much is the one-third? Because so far, the management has been releasing this money whenever they like and whatever they release is assumed to be the one-third of the SUG dues for the session.
Recently, engineering faculty after three good years of paying three thousand Naira (#3,000) per student received five hundred thousand naira (#500.000) as one-third of their SUG money. It is worthy of note that the engineering faculty in FUOtuoke has 6 departments with nothing less than 50 students per department in the pioneer set. How come 500,000 as one-third after 3 years? Is that not corruption and fraud?
The student union central caretaker chairman, Comr. Ikosomi Barry I. in an interview with our correspondent today cried out that he doesn’t even know what is happening again as he is also confused as to why the management is yet to grant financial autonomy to the union.
He used the opportunity to appeal to the management and all well-meaning bodies to come to the aid of the students union in FUO to help in achieving this feat. He also made it known that in his handover note, he will also appeal to the school management to grant this wish as an honorarium to them.
